Commodore 264 family of home computers

Commodore International Corporation(CI). decided to release cheap but efficient computers, in order to anticipate the advancing Japanese market. The first member of the group, later called the 264 family, the Commodore 16 (C16; top picture) essentially followed the VIC-20 architecture, but with nearly twice the operating speed and more efficient screen handling, at a significantly lower cost. The modest success of the “flagship” Commodore Plus/4 (C+4; middle picture) was, however, greatly dampened by the failure in the USA of the Commodore 116 (C116; bottom picture), which was released in a similar but smaller housing, almost identical to the C16, but even cheaper , the main reason for which was probably the “rubber” keyboard.
